The painting depicts a scene from the first act of the opera, set in a cavern. Robert is shown playing dice with two servants of the devil, while his father, Bertram (an evil genius), looks on from the right. In this moment, Robert is singing the famous aria "L'or est une chimère" ("Gold is but an illusion"), right before he loses all his money.
This work was displayed at the Salon of 1857 and is a key example of Courbet's approach to Realism, applying his style to a modern, popular theatrical subject that was nonetheless set in the Middle Ages.
